Standard Islamic terrorist picture

Extremist attacks took place in both Pakistan and Kenya this weekend. But just how religiously-motivated were these assaults?

This weekend, Islamic extremists Al-Shabab stormed into Kenya’s premier shopping mall, killing more than 70 people and counting. Several victims are still being held hostage. Meanwhile, miles away in Pakistan, two men stepped into a Christian church taking part in a double suicide bombing that killed 80 people and injuring several others. Islamic terrorist group TTP Jundullah is claiming responsibility.

Sources say that the Somalian militants asked their captives if they were Muslim before freeing those who swore by it. Similarly, the Pakistani attackers chose to attack a non-Muslim place of worship, as to free themselves of any guilt they may feel of involving their fellow Muslim brethren in the crossfire. In these killers’ minds, it seems that it’s only sinful to murder innocent people if they’re Muslim. That’s one step up from the twin towers, though still not strictly halal. Though again, this is only my personal perception of Islam.

And this is the truth – nobody knows what the genuine rules of Islam are. Just like nobody knows the genuine rules of Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism or any other religion. Over the years for holy books, things have been lost in translation, rewritten or new religious laws have been added with no relation to what’s come before. The reality is, no two people follow the same religion. These religious fundamentalists who carried out this weekend’s atrocities have as much a right to call themselves a Muslim as an alcoholic, sex-crazy transvestite does. What separates them is what they do as individual human beings.
